Miscellaneous legal documents include copies of summonses, 1844-1846, for Greene County, Va., debt suits; and guardianship appointment, 1852, for Martha Sherman, Monroe County, Mo. Correspondence includes family news and social news from family members in Kentucky and Missouri; and letters, 1861-1865, of Captain John M. Douglass, 155th Regiment, 1st District, 1st Company, Greene County, Va., to his wife Sallie and daughter Bettie, concerning the management of the plantation in his absence and frequent references to the slaves. Also includes letter, 1867, from C.V. Hill, a freedwoman working in Baltimore, and letter, 1870, from Emily, a freedwoman working at the Exchange Hotel in Harrisonburg. A letter from Margaret Rogers, relates the burning of the Kingston Mills in Atlanta, Ga. Also include accounts, 1883-1893, for the Ruckersville Post Office (Va.) with Internal Revenue accounts recording alcohol storage and sales taxes; plantation accounts, 1837-1877, some from Mountain View, with notations for corn, flour, household items; freedmen's agreements and sharecropping agreements.
